Aries Spears Interview: Comedy, Podcasting, and Career Reflections
Aries Spears, a renowned American stand-up comedian, actor, and voice actor, is best known for his nine-year tenure on MADtv (1995–2004), where his sharp wit and spot-on celebrity impressions, including Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Martin Lawrence, won over audiences. With roles in films like The Pest (1997), Jerry Maguire (1996), and The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (1993), Spears has built a multifaceted career. His voice acting credits include The Boondocks, Family Guy, and The Cleveland Show. A staple on the comedy circuit, Spears performs at iconic venues like The Comedy Store, Improv, and The Laugh Factory, and has released several stand-up comedy specials. He also co-hosts the Spearsberg Pod with comedian Andy Steinberg. In this exclusive interview, Spears reflects on his career, the impact of the pandemic, his podcasting journey, and his upcoming performances, offering insights for aspiring comedians and fans of stand-up comedy.
Favorite Places to Perform: East Coast Vibes
When asked about his favorite places to perform, Spears, a self-proclaimed East Coast native, shared his love for cities like Philadelphia, New York, Washington, D.C., West Palm Beach, and Miami.
"I’m an East Coast guy, so I love anywhere on the East Coast—Philly, New York, D.C., or even southern Florida like West Palm Beach and Miami," Spears said. "They’ve got that East Coast sass and pace I vibe with."
These locations resonate with his high-energy comedic style, making them ideal for his stand-up comedy performances.
Returning Home: The East Coast Connection
Spears, originally from New York, hasn’t performed in New York City since the pandemic but has played nearby areas like West Nyack, about 40 minutes outside the city. He noted that many New York venues are still recovering from the pandemic’s impact.
"I haven’t been to New York City since the pandemic, but places like Boston, D.C., and Philly have that same East Coast vibe I love," he said. "It’s fast-paced, sassy, and real."
This connection to his roots fuels his performances, bringing authenticity to his stand-up comedy shows.
Pandemic Reflections: Staying True to Stand-Up
The COVID-19 pandemic forced comedians to adapt, but Spears remained committed to traditional stand-up. He dismissed alternatives like Zoom comedy shows or parking lot performances where audiences honked horns instead of laughing.
"The pandemic taught me there’s only one true way to do stand-up: the honest, traditional way," Spears said. "Zoom stand-up with no audience or performing in a parking lot? There’s no substitute for the real thing."
This experience reinforced his dedication to authentic stand-up comedy performances, a lesson for aspiring comedians navigating the evolving entertainment industry.
The Spark for Comedy: Early Inspirations
Spears’ love for comedy began in childhood, influenced by his father’s introduction to comedy legends like Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, and Abbott and Costello. Eddie Murphy’s dominance in the 1980s, through Saturday Night Live, Trading Places, and Beverly Hills Cop, inspired Spears to pursue comedy.
"Eddie Murphy was like a king in the ‘80s," Spears recalled. "Watching him on SNL and in movies, I knew I wanted to follow that path."
This passion for stand-up comedy and celebrity impressions shaped his career, making him a standout in the comedy world.
Dream Impressions: James Gandolfini
When asked if there was anyone he wished he could have performed an impression for, Spears mentioned James Gandolfini, the late star of The Sopranos.
"I’d have loved to do my Tony Soprano impression for James Gandolfini, just to see his reaction," Spears said. "But he seemed like a guy you had to approach carefully, so it would’ve been intimidating."
This reflection highlights Spears’ talent for celebrity impressions, a hallmark of his comedy specials.
The Spearsberg Pod: Creative Control in Podcasting
Spears co-hosts the Spearsberg Pod with comedian Andy Steinberg, a platform where they speak freely on a range of topics. Podcasting has given Spears creative control in an era of political correctness.
"We’re like alcohol in the prohibition era—everybody wants to let loose," Spears said. "With all the political correctness and wokeness, we offer a space to speak freely."
While the podcast hasn’t yet reached its "apex of success," Spears remains committed to pushing it forward, leveraging podcasting for comedians to connect with audiences.
How the Podcast Began
Spears met Steinberg when the latter opened for him at comedy shows. Their partnership grew organically, leading to the creation of the Spearsberg Pod.
"Andy opened for me a couple of times, and we hit it off," Spears explained. "He suggested doing a podcast, and I thought, ‘Why not?’ It’s a way to flex those creative muscles."
This collaboration has become a key part of Spears’ career, offering fans a deeper look into his comedic perspective through comedy podcasts.
No Topic Off-Limits
The Spearsberg Pod prides itself on its openness, tackling topics without fear of censorship.
"We’re an open book," Spears said. "People are tired of not being able to speak freely, so we give them that raw, unfiltered conversation."
This approach has resonated with listeners, making the podcast a must-listen for fans of comedy podcasts and unfiltered entertainment.
Comedy Relationships: A Loner’s Perspective
Unlike some comedians who build close bonds with peers, Spears describes himself as a "loner" in the comedy world.
"I don’t have traditional comedy relationships like most," he said. "When I share moments with comedians I respect, it’s great, but they’re fleeting, so I don’t invest too much emotionally."
This independence has allowed Spears to carve his own path in the stand-up comedy scene.
The Midwest Experience
Spears’ limited experience in the Midwest, including a cold visit to Omaha, highlighted a contrast to his preferred fast-paced environments.
"The Midwest is laid-back, but I’m from New York, so I like a faster pace," he said. "LA’s perfect—not too fast, not too slow."
This perspective informs his approach to performing stand-up comedy across diverse regions.
Future Projects: Podcast and Beyond
Spears is focused on elevating the Spearsberg Pod while exploring other projects, including an independent film with comedian Paul Rodriguez.
"I’m putting energy into the podcast and have a movie with Paul Rodriguez on the back burner," he said. "You never know how those turn out, so I just do the work and leave the rest to fate."
These endeavors showcase Spears’ versatility as a comedian and actor.
Advice for Aspiring Comedians
For young comedians picking up the mic, Spears offered humorous yet practical advice:
"Have some drugs on standby—it’ll help," he joked. "Seriously, just be yourself and keep pushing through the tough nights."
This wisdom reflects his decades of experience in stand-up comedy and celebrity impressions.
