Lincoln, Neb. — Jeff Pilson, bassist and musical director for Foreigner, shared insights into his musical journey and responsibilities as the band prepares for its June 29, 2025, performance at Stir Concert Cove in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The concert follows Foreigner’s long-overdue Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and marks the final tour with lead singer Kelly Hansen before Luis Maldonado steps in as frontman.

Upholding Foreigner’s Legacy as Musical Director

As musical director, Pilson is entrusted with preserving the vision of Foreigner’s founder, Mick Jones. “It’s a significant responsibility,” Pilson said. “Leading this band in Mick’s absence is something I take seriously. As a Foreigner fan and someone who’s worked closely with Mick, I understand his vision and feel confident in keeping it authentic.” His goal is to ensure timeless hits like “I Want to Know What Love Is” remain relevant. “I want people listening to it 100 years from now,” he said.

Joining Foreigner: A Journey Sparked by Collaboration

Pilson joined Foreigner in 2004 after connecting with drummer Jason Bonham during the 2001 film Rockstar, where they co-wrote a song for the soundtrack. “The chemistry was immediate,” Pilson said of joining Foreigner after Bonham and Jones invited him to reform the band. He has been a cornerstone of the group ever since.

Early Beginnings and Musical Passion

Pilson’s passion for music began at age 14, inspired by friendships, early band experiences, and influences like Led Zeppelin and Yes. “Being in early bands felt like a calling,” he said. “I loved playing, and yes, the appeal of attracting attention didn’t hurt.” His first instrument was a Teisco bass, bought with paper route earnings, paired with a Gibson Skylark amp. “I was ready to rock,” he recalled.

Building a Career Through Connections

With a career spanning multiple bands and global stages, Pilson credits connections with fellow musicians for shaping his path. “Playing with others was the most rewarding part,” he said. “It confirmed this was my life’s work.” As a touring musician, professionalism became essential, but his enthusiasm never waned, describing his career as “a steady ascent.”

Embracing Studio Life and Modern Technology

A dedicated studio enthusiast, Pilson calls his home setup “the ultimate man cave,” equipped with vintage microphones and high-quality gear. While he misses legendary studios like Sound City and One on One in North Hollywood, he embraces modern technology. “I stay current with tools,” he said. “They shouldn’t replace creativity, but I use them to enhance it.”

Looking Ahead: Foreigner’s Future and Legacy

From his teenage years playing cello to steering Foreigner as musical director, Pilson’s journey reflects a lifelong dedication to music. As the band approaches this milestone tour, he remains committed to preserving Foreigner’s legacy while guiding its future.
