Less Than Jake Interview: Celebrating 25 Years of 'Hello Rockview' with the Welcome to Rockview Tour 2023
By Mitch West
For fans of ska-punk music, few bands evoke nostalgia like Gainesville, Florida's Less Than Jake. Known for their high-energy performances, these ska-punk rockers have been delivering unforgettable shows for over 25 years, earning a reputation as one of the most beloved ska-punk bands in the industry. On Aug. 15, 2023, Less Than Jake brought their Welcome to Rockview Tour 2023 to Lincoln, Nebraska, performing at The Bourbon Theatre alongside all-female punk rockers The Venomous Pinks and self-proclaimed "Chicago, Illinois' biggest crybabies," Devon Kay and The Solutions. The tour celebrates the 25th anniversary of their iconic 1998 album, Hello Rockview, which fans can hear in its entirety during these performances. We had the opportunity to interview Less Than Jake's saxophone player, JR Wasilewski, before their Lincoln show to discuss the tour, the band's legacy, and their connection to fans.
The Nostalgia of Hello Rockview and Its Connection to Skateboarding Culture
The Welcome to Rockview Tour 2023 celebrates the 25th anniversary of Hello Rockview, an album that defined the late '90s ska-punk scene and resonated with the resurgence of skateboarding culture. When asked why ska-punk music and skateboarding culture mesh so well, Wasilewski quipped, "Not sure why it works so well? I blame Tony Hawk! We are just glad people liked the record." This lighthearted response highlights the band's humility and appreciation for the fans who have kept Hello Rockview relevant for over two decades.
Curating the Perfect Tour Lineup
The Welcome to Rockview Tour 2023 features an impressive lineup, including Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Toasters, and, on select dates, The Venomous Pinks, Devon Kay and The Solutions, Pink Spiders, or Spring Heeled Jack. When asked about the process of selecting opening acts, Wasilewski explained, "We talk amongst ourselves and then ask our agents what bands are available. In this case, it was important to have a certain aesthetic for this tour. We are glad all the bands were available." This careful curation ensures the tour maintains the high-energy, ska-punk vibe that fans expect.
Staying Grounded on the Road with Silver Linings
Less Than Jake's 2020 album, Silver Linings, is a celebration of finding positivity without chasing fleeting moments. Its message resonates deeply in today's world. When asked about staying grounded on tour, Wasilewski shared, "Call my family, call my friends, talk to each other about how we can make the day better for others." This focus on connection and positivity underscores the band's commitment to meaningful relationships, both on and off the stage.
Memorable Performances and Midwest Energy
With a career spanning over 25 years, Less Than Jake has performed at countless venues worldwide. When asked about favorite shows, Wasilewski said, "Every show that people show up to and send and receive energy are my favorite shows." The Midwest, in particular, holds a special place for the band. "The shows that stick out are the ones where the energy is palpable. The Midwest always brings it," he added, highlighting the enthusiastic crowds that make their Nebraska and Midwest performances unforgettable.
Dream Collaborations and Bucket List Bands
Having shared stages with numerous iconic bands, Less Than Jake has checked off many dream collaborations. When asked about their bucket list of bands to tour with, Wasilewski noted, "Most of those bands no longer exist. So far, we are doing pretty good!" This response reflects the band's gratitude for their extensive career and the opportunities they've had to perform alongside their heroes.
Embracing Technology and AI in Music
As technology continues to shape the music industry, we asked how Less Than Jake approaches innovations like artificial intelligence (AI). Wasilewski admitted, "Haven't really thought about it. We are still a punk band with horns, so if we decide to add those elements, it becomes difficult live because we don't play to a click track or tracks. Not saying it won't happen, but who knows." This pragmatic approach shows their commitment to their raw, live sound while remaining open to future possibilities.
Advice for Aspiring Musicians
For young musicians starting out, Wasilewski offered simple yet profound advice: "Don't sweat things you can't control." This mindset reflects the band's resilience and adaptability, qualities that have sustained their long career in the ever-changing music industry.
Current Music Favorites and Bands to Watch
When it comes to current music, Less Than Jake stays connected to the scene. Wasilewski recommended, "Hot Mulligan is great. Devon Kay and The Solutions, Bad Operation, and Catbite." These bands, some of which are joining them on tour, represent the next generation of punk and ska-punk acts worth checking out.
