Yam Haus Interviewed

Minnesota indie-pop band Yam Haus delivered an electrifying performance at the Bourbon Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023. Co-headlining with Sawyer, the band is nearing the end of a 20-plus-show tour, culminating in their hometown, the Twin Cities. Known for their infectious energy and heartfelt lyrics, Yam Haus—comprising Lars Pruitt, Zach Beinlich, and Jake Felstow—sat down to discuss their musical journey, memorable moments, and upcoming debut album. Managed by Wilspro, booked through Paladin Artists, and signed to Big Loud Rock, Yam Haus is carving a unique path in the indie-pop scene.

The Origins of Yam Haus: From High School Hockey to College Jam Sessions

The band’s story began in high school, where frontman Lars Pruitt and bassist Zach Beinlich bonded over hockey in Minnesota. They later met drummer Jake Felstow in college, sparking impromptu jam sessions that laid the foundation for Yam Haus. “Jake hopped in as the drummer, and the rest is history,” Pruitt said. Their chemistry and shared passion for music have fueled their rise, blending indie-pop with rock influences to create a sound that resonates with fans across the Midwest and beyond.

Falling in Love With Music: A Journey Inspired by Green Day and Nirvana

Pruitt’s love for music ignited in fourth grade with the release of Green Day’s American Idiot. “It showed me music unlocks this ability to create with freedom, from power chords to entire songs,” he said. The album’s raw energy inspired him to pursue music seriously. If given the chance to see any band live, Pruitt would choose Nirvana at Minneapolis’ iconic First Avenue in 1991—a venue that holds special significance for Yam Haus. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the band sold out First Avenue, a 1,550-capacity club revered by Midwestern music fans. “Filling that venue as a local band who’d never toured felt like the sky was the limit,” Pruitt recalled.

Touring Triumphs and Challenges: From Blue October to Lincoln’s Electric Crowd

Post-pandemic, Yam Haus hit the road as an opening act for Blue October in fall 2021, touring the country for three months. “Load in, play, load out, night after night—it was a grind, but we loved it,” Pruitt said. The tour offered unforgettable memories, from sightseeing to savoring local cuisine. In spring 2023, Yam Haus performed in Lincoln for the first time, selling out a small room and upgrading to a larger one due to demand. “The crowd was electric, and it felt magical,” Pruitt said. A fan even gifted the band hand-knitted Yam Haus scarves, a heartfelt gesture that stood out.

Touring, however, isn’t without challenges. “It’s a grind, and we have utmost respect for anyone who does it for a living,” Pruitt said. Despite the hard work, the band thrives on connecting with fans and delivering high-energy performances.

What’s Next for Yam Haus: Debut Album and Favorite Live Tracks

Currently, Yam Haus is pouring energy into their debut album, set for release in 2024. Fans can expect a collection of tracks that showcase their signature indie-pop sound, layered with introspective lyrics and catchy melodies. Their favorite song to perform live, “Little Contradictions,” offers a glimpse of what’s to come. “It’s got this raw energy that connects with the crowd every time,” Pruitt said.
