Foreigner's Jeff Pilson Reflects on Career and Role as Musical Director Ahead of Final Tour with Kelly Hansen
Lincoln, NE — We recently got to chat with Jeff Pilson, Foreigner's bassist and musical director, who shared insights into his musical journey and the weight of his responsibilities as the band prepares for its June 29, 2025, concert at Stir Concert Cove, following their longer overdue Rock and Roll Induction and marking the final tour with lead singer Kelly Hansen before Luis Maldanado takes over.
As musical director, Pilson is tasked with preserving the vision of Foreigner’s founder, Mick Jones. “It’s a responsibility,” Pilson said. “I’m leading this outfit in Mick’s absence, and it’s a big responsibility I take seriously. I’m not only a Foreigner fan, but having worked with Mick extensively, I know his vision, and I feel capable of keeping it true.” He aims to ensure songs like “I Want to Know What Love Is” resonate for generations, stating, “I want people 100 years from now listening to it. That’s my goal.”
Pilson’s path to Foreigner began in 2004 after bonding with drummer Jason Bonham during the 2001 film “Rockstar,” where they co-wrote a song for the soundtrack. “The chemistry was instant,” Pilson recalled of joining Foreigner after Bonham and Jones invited him to reform the band. He has remained a core member since.

His love for music started early. At 14, Pilson knew he wanted to be a musician, driven by friendships, early band experiences, and the allure of bands like Led Zeppelin and Yes. “Being in early bands was a moral kind of thing,” he said. “Plus, I fell in love with playing, and of course, the getting girls aspect was very important.” His first instrument was a Tiesco bass, purchased with earnings from a paper route, paired with a Gibson Skylark amp. “I was ready to go!” he said.
Pilson’s career spans numerous bands and global stages, with highlights rooted in connections with fellow musicians. “It was a positive experience playing with other musicians that I got the most from,” he noted. “That made me realize that’s what I wanted to do.” Professionalism became key as a touring musician, but he maintained his enthusiasm, describing his career as “a steady glide path.”
A passionate studio enthusiast, Pilson cherishes his home setup, calling it “the best man cave I could ever imagine” with vintage mics and high-quality equipment. He misses the magic of iconic studios like Sound City and One on One in North Hollywood but embraces modern technology. “I try to stay as up to date as I can,” he said. “I don’t like using tools instead of creativity, but when they help, I use them as much as I can.”
Pilson’s journey from a cello-playing teenager to Foreigner’s musical director reflects a lifelong commitment to music. As the band approaches this pivotal tour, he remains dedicated to upholding Foreigner’s legacy while navigating its future.
